CYM crowns softball, baseball champions

St. Mary Magdalen wins CYM softball

STANTON – St. Mary Magdalen completed an undefeated season with a 6-3 win over Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Catholic Youth Ministry softball championship, which was played May 22 at Delaware Technical and Community College.

St. Mary Magdalen pitcher Rachel Pritchard struck out 13 batters in the winning effort. Kiersten Fallers had three hits and scored twice for the Bulldogs.

IHM played in the championship game for the third straight season and finished the year 9-2.

 

St. John the Beloved edges St. Anthony for baseball crown

WILMINGTON – Eric Cella pitched a complte-game three-hitter to lead St. John the Beloved to a 2-1 win over St. Anthony of Padua in the diocesan baseball championship game on May 29 at Banning Park. Cella also struck out eight batters. Alex Danz knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

For St. Anthony’s, pitcher Dante Cautillo also went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters.

 

Late double carries St. Mary of the Assumption to Y-1 title

WILMINGTON – Jake McCormick untied the game with a two-run double in the top of the sixth to lift St. Mary of the Assumption to a 6-4 win over Immaculate Conception in the Y1 Division baseball title game May 25 at Banning Park. Immaculate Conception’s first two batters reached base in the bottom of the inning, but Charlie Quimby retired the next three hitters to preserve the victory.

 

Y-2 championship game ends on play at the plate

WILMINGTON – Our Lady of Fatima/St. Peter the Apostle No. 2 defeated St. John the Beloved No. 3, 4-3, for the Y-2 Division crown May 25 at Banning Park. The victors scored the winning run in the top of the sixth and final inning. The game ended when Fatima/St. Peter’s catcher Nate Kukulich dove and tagged out a runner attempting to score on a passed ball in the last of the sixth.
