Challenges to marriage, religious liberty among Knights of Columbus’ concerns

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson called the number of attendees at the Knights of Columbus 130th supreme convention in Anaheim “a testament to the growth and development” of the international fraternal organization.

More than 2,000 Knights from around the world, many of them with their wives and children, along with 12 cardinals and more than 70 bishops attended the Aug. 6-8 convention.

Knights of Columbus praised for supporting religious freedom

VATICAN CITY — The Knights of Columbus “have worked tirelessly” to help U.S. Catholics recognize and oppose efforts to “redefine and restrict the exercise of the right to religious freedom,” said a message signed by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state.

The theme chosen for the Knights’ Aug. 7-9 convention in Anaheim, Calif., “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land,” is a reminder not only of “the great biblical ideals of freedom and justice which shaped the founding of the United States of America, but also the responsibility of each new generation to preserve, defend and advance those great ideals in its own day,” the cardinal wrote.

New archbishop of San Francisco leads bishops’ Defense of Marriage committee

WASHINGTON — Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Archbishop George H. Niederauer of San Francisco and named Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of Oakland, Calif., to succeed him.

Archbishop Niederauer, 76, had headed the San Francisco Archdiocese since 2005. A priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, he also served as bishop of Salt Lake City for 10 years.

Report: Children do best raised by biological parents in stable marriage

ATLANTA — Young adults raised by their biological parents in a stable marriage fared better emotionally, socially and relationally, according to a University of Texas at Austin study.

The New Family Structures Study by Mark Regnerus of the university’s Population Research Center measured outcomes in 40 areas including social and economic well-being, psychological and physical health, sexual identity, sexual behavior and criminal behavior.

Bishop: Church has long sought ‘decent health care for all’

The chairman of the U.S. bishops’ domestic policy committee said that “long before the current battles” over health care reform and the federal contraception mandate, “the Catholic Church was persistently and consistently advocating for this overdue national priority” of universal health care.

“Since 1919, the United States Catholic bishops have supported decent health care for all and government and private action to advance this essential goal,” said Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Stockton, Calif., chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Bishop urges Congress to help jobless and their families

WASHINGTON — With the median length of unemployment reaching 10 months and more than four job seekers for every opening, Congress must find ways to continue unemployment compensation to protect jobless workers and their families, said the chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.

“For millions of American workers and their families, economic hardship continues and grows,” said Bishop Stephen E. Blaire of Stockton, Calif., in a Dec. 12 letter to House members.

Calif. bishop calls for good stewardship of God’s air

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The gift of clean air provided by God to humanity deserves to be protected through strong environmental stewardship by making changes in daily life so that fewer pollutants enter the atmosphere, said the chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice Human Development.

Blaire of Stockton, Calif., urged an audience at the interfaith Festival of Faiths conference Nov. 7 that taking steps to live more simply, use natural resources wisely and reduce personal consumption, air pollution and one’s carbon footprint to ensure clean air for all and to ease the effects of climate change on the world’s poorest people.

Bishops urge Senators to uphold Defense of Marriage Act

WASHINGTON — The U.S. bishops have urged the Senate Judiciary Committee not to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA, calling it important for human rights and the common good.

“DOMA advances the common good in a manner consistent with the human dignity of all persons,” Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of Oakland, Calif., chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, wrote in a Nov. 2 letter to committee members.
