Are you an ingrate or thankful? Take another look at missing Mass on Sundays

Over the past year or so, I’ve been studying the decline in Sunday Mass attendance in the Catholic community. An old friend who knew what I was up to recently sent me a letter indicating that he had read an article I wrote based on “exit interviews” with nonchurchgoing Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton, N.J.

My friend mentioned that one of his philosophy professors years ago at the University of Notre Dame used to say that “Catholics have lost the sense of what is at stake in life,” and my friend interpreted his professor to be saying that “maybe a large number of Catholics may not be spending eternity in God’s presence.”

Let’s be persuasive and civil after a presidential poke in the eye

Call it curious, ironic or just plain strange. New York Cardinal-designate Timothy M. Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, published a Jan. 25 op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal to express his frustration over President Barack Obama’s ruling that most health insurance plans will have to cover contraception and other measures that are forbidden by official church teaching.

This points to a communication gap between Catholic leadership and the White House that has not always been there.
