WILMINGTON – Christine Robinson Dunning made history last month when she was sworn in as Wilmington’s first female police chief, but the lifelong city resident didn’t see her appointment as the breaking of a glass ceiling.
“I know it’s historical, but I know I’m qualified for the job. I just don’t like to use my gender as a base for why I have this position,” Dunning said last week in her office on North Walnut Street.
When she joined the department in October 1986, she had hopes of moving up the ranks, but the chief’s job seemed out of reach when Wilmington Mayor Dennis P. Williams announced during his campaign last year that he would hire someone from outside the city. Read more »
