WILMINGTON — Five lay leaders have received certification in ministerial leadership in Hispanic/Latino ministry from the Northeast Hispanic Catholic Center, an institute of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. They received their certificates last weekend from Bishop Malooly.

The five have been studying Scripture, and theological and pastoral ministry topics for the past five years. The certification licenses them to serve as pastoral agents at their parishes and in the diocese. They are:

Miguelina Cruz, St. Michael the Archangel, Georgetown. From the Dominican Republic, Cruz ministers to single mothers and young couples. She also visits inmates at the Sussex County prison and serves on the parish council, is president of the diocesan Hispanic Ministry Council and assists with the diocesan San Marcos solidarity team.

Martha del Campo, Our Lady of Lourdes, Seaford. Del Campo ministers to young parents, presents parenting classes, and coordinates liturgy and environmental concerns. The native of Mexico promotes the Juan XXIII retreat movement and formation classes in Spanish.

Magda Kellum, Ss. Peter and Paul, Easton, Md. Kellum, from Guatemala, teaches adult Bible studies and assists with parish events and music ministry. She also promotes the Juan XXIII retreat movement and formation classes in Spanish.

Francia Elena Tamayo, Our Lady of Fatima, New Castle. A native of Colombia, Tamayo is a catechist for children preparing for first Communion, a prayer group coordinator, lector, Eucharistic minister, and visitor to the sick and infirm. She is also vice president of the diocesan Hispanic Ministry Council.

Maria Esther Zamora, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Frankford. A lector and liturgical minister coordinator, Zamora is from Mexico. She is a leadership assistant with the Guadalupe Committee and promotes participation in youth activities and diocesan formation courses in Spanish.
