MILL CREEK – Abby Cunningham fired a two-hitter to lead Padua past Delmar, 3-0, on May 25 as the teams wrapped up the regular season at the Midway Softball Complex. The Pandas finished at 15-3 and grabbed the fifth seed in the state softball tournament.

Both Cunningham and Delmar pitcher Tracy Pleasanton worked out of minor jams in the first inning. Cunningham settled in after that, retiring the Wildcats in order in the second through fifth innings.

softballPadua finally got something going on offense in the fifth. Hannah Williams singled and stole second, and she took third on an error. She scored on a hard hit ball past the shortstop by Caitlyn Baxter. Kierstin Fallers followed with an RBI single and ended up on third following an error. Cunningham brought Fallers in with a bloop single for the 3-0 lead.

Cunningham ended up retiring 18 in a row until Hannah Davis singled with two outs in the seventh. Delmar, which finished the season at 3-15, had just two juniors and no seniors on its roster this season.

“It was important to keep them off balance by working both sides of the plate. In the first inning they caught up to my changeup, and I recognized it and adjusted to it,” Cunningham said.

The Pandas open play in the state tournament on Saturday when they host No. 12 Charter at 11 a.m. at Midway.
