WILMINGTON – St. Thomas More took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning during its baseball game Thursday against Howard, but the final three outs proved elusive. Howard scored three times to tie the game, then completed the comeback with a walkoff single in the eighth and a 7-6 win in the heat at Frawley Stadium.

The seventh inning was one of close calls that did not go the Ravens’ way. A walk, double and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out. Austin Zarco singled home Jacob Couden with the first run to make it 6-4.

Ravens pitcher Ben Stant got the first out on a fly ball to left. Darin Matthews, the runner at third base, was caught off the bag, but he was able to get back to third safely following a short rundown. Matthews scored on a single, cutting the St. Thomas More lead to one and keeping the bases loaded. Sammy Lewis then flied to center field for the second out, and Howard’s Ky’el Brown-Thompson took off from third. He barely slid under the tag of Ravens catcher Matt Torbert to tie the game.

It took just two batters in the eighth for Howard to walk off. Victor Lebron opened the frame with a double to right field, and he came home on a single to center by Couden.

The loss obscured a good outing by the Ravens, who were looking for their third win of the season. Stant allowed just four hits prior to the seventh, although he did hit three other batters. Two of the runs he allowed were unearned, and he struck out four.

Offensively, Stant helped himself with a run-scoring single in the first, when St. Thomas More took a 2-0 lead. Rob McElligott, who reached on a single, then scored on a groundout by Patrick Magee.

After Howard tied the game with single runs in the second and third, the Ravens notched a pair in the fourth. Magee began the fourth with a long triple to left-center. De’Markus Lee scored Magee with a chopper over the outstretched glove of the pitcher. Lee advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another wild pitch.

McElligott singled in the fifth and came around to score, and in the next inning, Lee opened the inning with a triple, then scored on a two-out error. Lee finished with three hits and two runs scored, while Torbert had two knocks.

Torbert, who moved to pitcher in the seventh inning, took the hard-luck loss. The Ravens (2-10) are home Friday at 4 p.m. against Seaford.

Lebron, who pitched the final two innings to earn the win, finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Couden added two hits and a run. The Wildcats (6-9) are on the road Saturday at 11 a.m. at McKean.
