Sals ground out win, turn attention to top-ranked Middletown

WILMINGTON – Salesianum, ranked second in the 302 Sports top 10, scored four rushing touchdowns and held off visiting Episcopal Academy (Pa.), 28-20, on Oct. 7. The Sals improved to 4-1 and will host No. 1 Middletown on Friday the 13th and looked to pass this test against a strong opponent.

The Sals started strong, going 88 yards on their first drive of the game. The Sals got a big key run by quarterback Zach Gwynn of 15 yards on a third-and-10. Garrett Million and Carson Salvo also both had big runs on this drive, the last one a 29-yard touchdown run by Salvo. The Sals looked to have added another score on their second drive, but a penalty took the points off the board. Salesianum scored on its third drive as Million scampered 43 yards to give the home team a 14-0 lead with 52 seconds left in the first quarter.

Episcopal dominated the second quarter and scored on two short touchdown runs to tie it at 14 at the half. The Sals retook the lead late in the third quarter as Million found the end zone on a 3-yard run to end a 70-yard drive. The Sals then added another score with 7:40 left in the game as Salvo ran one in from four.  The drive included a 9-yard run by Gwynn on a third-and-8. He also added the two-point conversion on a sweet run.

Episcopal didn’t make it easy, as they capped a 70-yard drive with 3:29 left to cut it to 28-20. The Sals held on a fourth-and-10 with 20 seconds left to seal the win.

The Sals had a strong game running the ball and improved to 2-0 at home. Get to Baynard Stadium early on Friday as the top two schools meet. They have played four times the last two years and have split the games. The Sals won both at home while losing both on the road.
