Wallace scores twice, McCloskey preserves lead as Sals take soccer crown

SMYRNA – Salesianum’s soccer team posed in the net, eight fingers extended to signify the school’s eighth consecutive state championship. But this was the first time this group of seniors had allowed the opponent to score in the final, and it took a herculean effort from goalkeeper Emmett McCloskey to preserve a 2-1 victory over Appoquinimink on Nov. 18 at Smyrna High School.

Bryce Wallace was the offensive hero for Sallies, scoring twice in his final high school game. That includes the title-clincher in the 57th minute, where Ethan Lupichuk took a pass from Drew Blackwell deep into the corner to the left of the Appo goal and sent a cross into the crease in front of Jaguars keeper Jason Sommer. Sallies dominates possession in opening-round soccer win

BEAR – Salesianum is used to championship soccer teams, but the 2017 version might be among the best seen on 18th and Broom streets. The Sals opened their march toward an eighth straight state championship by scoring two first-half goals, then holding on in the brisk weather for a 2-0 victory over eighth-seeded Wilmington Charter on Nov. 11 at Bob Peoples Stadium at Caravel Academy. Sals remain undefeated on pitch after shutout win at Wilmington Charter

WILMINGTON – Salesianum and Wilmington Charter both entered their nonconfernce soccer match on the afternoon of Sept. 22 having scored 18 goals and allowed two. The Sals were undefeated, while the Force were 3-1, with only a one-goal loss.

The top-ranked Sals swarmed No. 5 Charter early and did not let up, scoring three times in the first 25 minutes on their way to an 8-0 victory on the first day of fall. Bryce Wallace led the way with a pair of goals and an assist, and the Salesianum defense held the Force to just one shot. Read more »

Sals soccer returns to win column with win over Spartans

WILMINGTON – It was Senior Night at Salesianum, and the Sals soccer team sent their veterans out in style, defeating archrival St. Mark’s, 7-0, at Baynard Stadium.

Looking to end a two-game losing streak, both shutouts, the Sals got on the board early when Conor Samuels buried one past a diving goalkeeper in the 13th minute. Five minutes later, Jordan MacFarlane sprinted down the left side and beat Spartans keeper John Perry for a 2-0 lead. Read more »
