Spartans upset Friends in volleyball instant classic

MILLTOWN – St. Mark’s, currently ranked eighth in the state in volleyball, pulled off an early upset, outlasting No. 4 Wilmington Friends in five sets on Sept. 13. The Spartans took an intense match by scores of 25-7, 18-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 18-16.

St Mark’s started strong in the first set, thanks to some early kills by Gillian Lytle and Erin Derick, as they went up, 13-6. They ended the set on a 12-1 run behind the serving game of Grace Frati, who had four aces in the final nine points. Read more »

Archmere passes test with sweep of Friends

CLAYMONT – The second-ranked Auks of Archmere used a strong defense to sweep fourth-ranked Wilmington Friends, 3-0, Tuesday evening at Archmere. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20.

The first set was one of runs. Archmere jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the last point coming on a kill by Amy Thompson. But Friends rebounded, scoring 12 of the next 14, including two aces from junior setter Alyssa Nathan, to go ahead, 12-6. The Auks responded in kind, tallying 12 of the next 17 behind their defense and some timely kills by Zoe Akoto. Akoto ended the set a bit later with a thunderous kill. Read more »
