Derick, Seemans key in Spartans sweep at Friends

Spartans seek to build on last season’s volleyball success

St. Mark’s surprised some observers last season by putting up a 9-6 regular season before falling to Wilmington Charter in the first round of the tournament.

“I was a little surprised (by last year’s success),” senior hitter Erin Derick said. “Going into the tournament and having a bye, that was surprising for me because I’d never had one before, but with all the great girls that we had, it wasn’t that surprising.” Read more »

Team-first attitude lifts St. Mark’s on volleyball court

WILMINGTON — St. Mark’s is coming off a season in which there were no real surprises as far as wins and losses were concerned. It added up to an 8-7 record. The Spartans, however, had a little extra pep in their steps in the postseason, upsetting Smyrna in the second round before Padua got to them in the quarterfinals.

Two senior hitters have graduated from that squad, but that pair had a large supporting cast that is back in 2016. Senior Genevieve Hughes and juniors Grace Frati and Erin Derick will be wreaking havoc up front, and they are welcoming back junior Gillian Lytle, who tore ligaments in her knee in the first match of 2015. Lytle said she is “ecstatic” to be back.

Spartans volleyballers see better things in upcoming campaign

Another former state champion that finished last season 8-7 and on the outside of the postseason looking in is St. Mark’s, but the Spartans are hopeful their fortunes will turn around in 2015. They are bringing back three seniors and five juniors, along with four sophomores. Nearly all have varsity experience.

The leaders are seniors Addison Reich and Kara Wirt. Wirt had 281 assists last season, while Reich teamed with junior Genevieve Hughes and sophomore Gillian Lytle for 183 kills. Read more »
