Vikings cool off after fast start, fall to Caravel in girls semifinals

NEWARK – Third-seeded Caravel advanced to its third girls basketball state championship game in five years after defeating No. 7 St. Elizabeth, 44-36, on March 8 at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Buccaneers will face the top seed, Ursuline, on Friday at 7 p.m., also at the Bob, in a rematch of the 2015 final. Bucs senior Grace Lange, who was a sophomore when Caravel fell to Ursuline two years ago, led the way with a double-double, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. Read more »

Caravel girls hold off Auks in overtime thriller

BEAR – Fourth-ranked Caravel held off No. 9 Archmere, 46-39, on Jan. 28, but the Buccaneers needed overtime to get the job done.

Grace Lange got the Buccaneers off to a great start by scoring 10 of her 13 points in the opening quarter. She scored less than five seconds in to begin a quick 8-0 run. Danaziah Brown hit a three-pointer, and Emma McCann scored on a jumper to cut it to 10-5. Lange took over, scoring the next six points to give Caravel its largest lead at 16-5. Vikings girls pick up hoops win over top-five foe

WILMINGTON – The St. Elizabeth Vikings girls basketball team has played the toughest schedule in the state so far, and on Jan. 13 they defeated third-ranked Caravel 50-49 at the St E Center.

The Vikings, ranked fifth in the state, got the win they were looking for to improve to 4-5 on the season. Alexis Lee scored 13 second-half points and the team’s 1-3-1 zone defense slowed down the Buccaneers three-point shooting. Read more »
