Purnell pitches, hits William Penn softball past St. Elizabeth, 4-3

WILMINGTON – Indira Purnell scattered five hits and struck out nine, and she hit a solo home run, to lead William Penn to a 4-3 win in nonconference softball on May 15 at Canby Park.

A strong wind blew in from right field throughout the day, wreaking havoc on fly balls and resulting in a centerfielder catching one in the infield for an out, but Purnell used it to her advantage leading off the fourth. She sent a shot over the leftfielder’s head, with the wind taking the ball away from the fielder. Purnell never stopped running and easily beat the throw home to put the Colonials ahead, 2-0. Casson’s arm, Roncone’s bat lead Vikings to first softball win

BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – Julia Casson went the distance, allowing just three hits and striking out nine as St. Elizabeth found the win column for the first time this season with a 13-1 five-inning decision over Brandywine in nonconference softball March 30. Claudia Roncone had two hits, drove in four runs and scored three times to lead the Vikings’ offense.

St. Elizabeth wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Marissa Kegelman singled to open the game, taking second on a fielding error. One out later, Roncone doubled over the head of the Bulldogs’ centerfielder, scoring Kegelman. Roncone took third on the throw and scored on another error. Read more »

Coyle’s big day at plate helps Spartans past Vikings in softball

WILMINGTON – Senior Emily Coyle had two hits and four runs batted in to lead the St. Mark’s Spartans to an 8-7 win over the St. Elizabeth Vikings on March 23 at Canby Park. The game was moved from St Mark’s to Canby because of last week’s snowstorm and has resulted in the Spartans playing three games in as many days. Long balls, Browning’s arm lead Raiders past St. Elizabeth in softball

WILMINGTON – Rory Kendle and Antonia Browning hit home runs to lead Ursuline to a 4-1 win over St. Elizabeth on May 19. The Raiders’ road victory at Canby Park spoiled the Vikings’ senior day.

Browning was dealing on the mound early as she struck out the first six batters she faced. Vikings pitcher Julia Casson also was tossing up zeros as she gave up a single to Kendle in the first but kept the Raiders off the board for three innings. Read more »
