Archmere celebrated a state championship after the golf team rallied from five strokes down after the first day for a one-stroke victory over Tatnall on May 28-29 at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover.

It is the first title for the Auks in the sport.

Tatnall had a score of 310 after the first round, followed by Polytech and Caesar Rodney before Archmere. The Auks rallied on the second day, finishing six strokes better than Tatnall for a 539-540 decision over the Hornets.

Danielle Higbee was the top Auks scorer. The junior shot 81-73 to finish fourth among the girls entered in the event. Archmere also featured Meredith Finger in sixth place and Hannah Webb in seventh in the girls’ competition. In the boys’ competition, Henry Nowak tied for eighth, and Jake Lairdieson was in a four-way tie for 16th. Michael Liu also competed for the Auks, finishing in a four-way tie for 26th place.

The top four scores from each team are counted on the first day, along with the three lowest scores from the second day to determine a team score. Salesianum finished in fifth place, seven strokes back of Archmere. The teams shot the same score on the second day.

Archmere is coached by Matt Krass, with John Kelly assisting him in a volunteer capacity. Lairdieson is the only senior on the 12-player roster. Archmere finished the regular season with a record of 14-2.
