CHILDS, Md.Catholic Schools Week at Mount Aviat Academy brings out the thespian in the seventh- and eighth-graders. Each year, the oldest students at the school in Childs, Md., present a play for the rest of the school during the day, then have an encore for parents and the wider school community that night.

This year, the students performed “Pirates of the Curry Bean,” described by its writer, Craig Hawes, as a “swashbuckling pirate adventure on the high seas” and a “piratical musical that’s sure to shake your booty.”

In the story, young twins yearn for adventure and discover a real-life treasure map, but the Pirates of the Curry Bean steal the map and kidnap the twins’ mother. That sets off a race to rescue the mother, reclaim the map and find the treasure.

“Today is the day you’ve all been waiting for,” said Mount Aviat principal Oblate Sister John Elizabeth Callaghan in introducing the play to the students.

About 40 students were in the cast, according to school admissions director Charlene Nichols. If the laughs and applause were any indication, they did a great job entertaining the rest of the student body.
