Basketball heats up in Diocese of Wilmington, and Howdy Duncan, Beast of the East return for wrestlers

With the fall sports finally a memory, all attention turns to the winter competition. Basketball heats up and features the usual pre-holiday tournaments, with some good in-state games mixed in. The wrestling calendar includes two of the area’s biggest tournaments.

Chesapeake Anne Arundel at Ss. Peter and Paul (3-2), 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday

Padua (0-1) at Mount Pleasant (2-2), 3:30 p.m.

St. Elizabeth (0-0) at Delcastle (1-2), 3:45 p.m.

Howard (0-1) at Archmere (2-0), 6:15 p.m.

Thursday

Ursuline (1-2) at Padua, 6 p.m.

St. Elizabeth at Polytech (1-2), 6 p.m.

Wilmington Charter (2-0) at Saint Mark’s (4-0), 7:15 p.m. The Force visit the Spartans in an early matchup of unbeatens. Charter is led by veteran guards Emma Brown and Sophia Meara. The Spartans, meanwhile, do not have a single senior on the roster, but juniors Sophia Messick and Bella Prado give them a good inside-outside combination.

William Penn (3-0) at St. Elizabeth, 7:15 p.m. The Vikings are off to a good start, but they face their second Blue Hen Conference Flight A test this week at home against the Colonials. Kye Rawls and Jermai Herring pace St. Elizabeth, while William Penn’s Gabe Valmond is among the top scorers in Delaware in the early going.
