WILMINGTON — Newark Charter had an answer each time Ursuline got close, and the Patriots left Serviam Field with a 5-3 girls soccer win on May 13.

Newark Charter came out strong and kept the ball for most of the early going. They got a throw-in deep in their offensive end of the field 10 minutes in, and Juliet Brand deposited the ball behind Raiders keeper Julia Terzaghi for the 1-0 lead.

The Patriots kept the pressure on the Raiders, but Terzaghi and the defense kept the margin at a single goal. Ursuline took advantage of an opportunity and tied the game in the 22nd minute. Zoe Carberry lined up a free kick from about 30 yards out, and she sent the ball over the arms of Patriots keeper Addison Townsend and the crossbar for a goal.

It took the Patriots just two minutes to regain the lead. This time, Elizabeth Campbell raced to a ball rolling through the 6-yard box and redirected it into the net. The Newark Charter lead was 2-1 at the half.

The Raiders came out after halftime with a more aggressive approach, and it paid dividends quickly. Isabella Cicero raced toward a ball sent toward the Patriots’ goal, and she was able to roll it past Townsend and just inside the right post in the 43rd minute.

The tie, again, was short-lived. Terzaghi stopped one shot, and Mary Querey blocked a shot off a set piece on a corner kick in the minute after the tying goal. Newark Charter’s Ella Miller, however, put her team back on top with a shot that appeared to hit a defender in front before going in.

The Patriots opened up a two-goal lead in the 47th minute, this on a shot by Mia Lang. That score held up for about 13 minutes before Ursuline answered with another pinpoint shot. In the 66th, Querey took a shot from about 30 yards out, and again the Raiders snuck one between Townsend and the crossbar.

Terzaghi made three stops as the Raiders attempted to level the score, but Townsend came up with two big saves with less than eight minutes remaining. Carberry nearly tied it up in the 74th, sending a shot through the gloves of Townsend, who was able to turn around the snag the ball before it went over the line.

The Patriots added an insurance goal in the final 90 seconds.

Newark Charter had an 11-7 shot advantage and took two corner kicks to the Raiders’ one. Townsend had four saes. The Patrtiots (8-6) visit Milford on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Terzaghi stopped six shots. The Raiders (8-5-1) host St. Andrew’s on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Those are the regular-season finales for both teams.
