CLAYMONT — The remaking of the performing arts center at Archmere Academy got started June 8 with a visit from Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio to the Claymont campus.
The Abessinios joined Archmere headmaster Michael Marinelli and members of EDiS Co. for a symbolic start to the work, along with a construction party on the lawn of the Patio. The remade space will be called the Rocco and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Center in honor of a $3 million donation from the family’s foundation.
The kickoff event featured alumni emcees Jim DeProphetis (Class of 2000) and Sean Carroll (1994), along with performances by recent graduate Maile Gutsche and current Archmere students Bridget McNamara and Caleigh Crane, both rising seniors.
The current performing arts center was constructed in 1983. The renovations will cover the 700-seat gallery, lobby, art gallery, backstage green room, dressing room, and choral and band rooms. It is scheduled to open next March.
The donation to Archmere included $2 million for the performing arts center and another million for need-based scholarships. From the $2 million, half has been established as a one-to-one challenge grant, hoping to encourage others to donate to the project.
The school is also conducting a “Buy a Seat” campaign. Those who donate $1,000 will receive a personalized plaque on a designated theater seat. For more information, go to www.archmereacademy.com/PAC.
