Early September events in the Diocese of Wilmington during the last ‘official’ summer beach weekend

Hopefully the heat waves are now behind, and better weather means more time to have fun. With so much to do around the Diocese of Wilmington, there is always an opportunity enjoy family and faith activities. Check these out:

  • Support the Little Sisters of the Poor by signing up for the annual Nun Run/Walk 5K at the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark on  7.The pre-registration price is $35 per person. For more information, runsignup.com/Race/DE/Newark/NunRun5K
  • Also, on  Sept. 7 at 9 a.m.: Padua Academy is hosting the annual PANDAmonium 5K. Registration begins at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. race time, at Rockford Tower in Wilmington.   • On Sept. 7, at 11 a.m., join the Knights of Peter Claver for the annual St. Peter Claver feast day Mass, at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington. Bishop Koenig will be the celebrant, and Father Glenn Evers will deliver the homily. Refreshments and fellowship will follow in the church hall, which is handicapped-accessible.   • Sept. 8, seatings at 4 or 6 p.m.: Padua Academy is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner in the school cafeteria, 905 N. Broom St., Wilmington. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. More information at www.paduaacademy.org, click Welcome Back Weekend button.
  • And also on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m., check out Trio Caliente! in concert at Mary Mother of Peace Church, 30839 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro. This dynamic group from Washington, DC, known for their unique Latin-fusion music, will deliver an unforgettable concert featuring their all-original acoustic compositions. Trio Caliente’s repertoire includes many classic Latin arrangements and genres including Flamenco Rumba, Salsa, Brazilian Jazz, Cumbia, and Reggaeton. The trio is comprised of acoustic guitarists Miguel Bard and Benjamín Schnake, and vocalist/percussionist Deborah “Belladonna” Benner. Their award-winning music, celebrated worldwide, promises an energetic and fun experience for all ages.   • Golfers should check out the Immaculate Conception/St. Jude Golf Classic, on Sept. 9 at Deerfield Country Club, 507 Thompson Station Rd., Newark.   • On  Sept. 7 & 14, there will be memorial services to observe the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children — at Cathedral Cemetery (on Sept. 14 at 8 a.m.), Holy Child Parish (Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.), Gate of Heaven Cemetery (on Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.) and Holy Cross Cemetery (Sept. 14 at 10 a.m.).   • On Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. St. Hedwig’s Parish will host the annual 9/11 Anniversary Mass. Bishop Koenig will be the main celebrant. St. Hedwig’s is located at 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington. All are welcome.
  • On Sept. 14, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.:  Holy Angels Church is hosting a huge furniture sale. Appliances, furniture, lamps, artwork, electronics and more. For more information send text to 302-690-4047. Holy Angels is located at 82 Possum Park Road, Newark.

  • Golfers should register now for the annual CYO Joseph A. McNesby Jr. Golf Outing on Sept. 18 at Deerfield Golf Club. The day starts at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon, and auction/dinner at 5:30 p.m. $200 per golfer, with an additional $30 tournament specials. Sponsorships are also being accepted.   • Looking ahead to the fall, The St. Margaret of Scotland Church Activities Committee is looking for vendors, crafters and flea marketers to join them on Sept. 28 for the Fifth Annual Outdoor Marketplace from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rain or shine event held in the parking lot of St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark.   • Sept. 28, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: Diocese of Wilmington Annual Marian Pilgrimage, Holy Spirit Church, 12 Winder Rd., New Castle. Keynote speaker is Fr. Sebastian White, OP, editor of Magnificat. The Pilgrimage begins with morning Mass at 10 a.m. and concludes with the Vigil Mass at 4 p.m. Bishop Koenig will preside. In addition to Father White’s presentation, the pilgrimage will also include confessions, the Rosary, and Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome. More information, www.cdow.org/marianpilgrimage/
  • On  Oct. 5 join Bishop Koenig and other Catholics in Ocean City, Md., for the Diocese of Wilmington Eucharistic Congress. Held at the Ocean City Convention Center, the theme is “The Eucharist: Source and Summit.” The day features keynote address by Bishop Richard Henning of the Diocese of Providence, and will include faith-based vendors, a ministry fair, and sessions geared toward various interests and age groups. There will also be opportunities for Adoration and Reconciliation.
