ASTON, Pa. — Sister Marietta Culhane, a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 71 years, died in Crozer-Chester Medical Center on Jan. 6. She was 94.
A native of Chicago, Sister Marietta entered the congregation in 1951 and professed her first vows in 1953. She ministered primarily in education, administration and parish ministry. In the Diocese of Wilmington, she worked in house ministry for four years.
Sister Marietta spent 31 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a teacher and as the archdiocesan supervisor of math. She later served as the dean of instruction at Essex Community College and as an ethics consultant, and also in pastoral ministry. In the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, she was an academic dean and instructor at Neumann University for nine years, and she coordinated education for the congregation at Our Lady of Angels Convent for four years.
She received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope John Paul II in 2004. Sister Marietta also conducted more than 250 math workshops in 18 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
All services will be at Assisi House on Jan. 10 and will be livestreamed. A Christian wake service begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing. The Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.
