Salesianum will begin the process of reclaiming its state title in boys lacrosse Tuesday night at Baynard Stadium. There, the top-ranked Sals will host No. 16 Delmar in the first round of the state tournament at 6 p.m.
The Sals enter the postseason with a 12-3 record, with all three losses coming to out-of-state teams, including one of Canada’s top squads. The other losses were both by one goal. Salesianum played a schedule heavy on non-Delaware competition; among First State foes, the Sals defeated St. Mark’s twice, along with Wilmington Friends, Cape Henlopen and Caesar Rodney.
Cape scored a major upset last May when the Vikings beat Salesianum for the state championship. They are the second seed this season and will open Wednesday night at home vs. No. 15 Smyrna.
Other Catholic high schools in the field include Archmere and St. Mark’s. The Auks (13-2) are seeded seventh and host No. 10 Sussex Tech at 5 p.m. Wednesday. St. Mark’s finished the regular season 7-7, which earned the Spartans the 13th seed and a trip to No. 4 Tower Hill on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The other first round matchups include No. 8 Delaware Military Academy vs. No. 9 Wilmington Friends; No. 12 St. Andrews at No. 5 Appoquinimink; No. 14 Concord at No. 3 Caesar Rodney; and No. 11 Dover at No. 6 Milford.
The quarterfinals will be played Saturday at the home of the higher seed. The semifinals are May 27, and the final will take place May 29 or 30. Salesianum’s graduation is set for May 29.
