BEAR – Archmere fell behind St. Georges, 2-0, in a first-round Division II soccer tournament match Nov. 9 at Caravel Academy. The fifth-seeded Auks mounted some great offensive pressure, but fell, 2-1, on the chilly, rainy evening.

soccerThe Auks had the first two shots on goal but were turned away by Hawks keeper Troy Fitzgerald. No. 12 St. Georges made the most of their only attack in the first half when Wade Draper found David Angulo on a chip pass over the Archmere keeper’s head for the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.

The Hawks got a gift in the 48th minute when a pass back to the keeper missed and Rodger Buesmall buried it into the open net.

Archmere then had six corner kicks in a two-minute span and scored in the 57th on a header by Frankie Fanning. His teammate, Sean Murray, placed the ball perfectly on the corner.

The Auks pressed for the equalizer, and Murray had a free kick that was punched over the crossbar by Fitzgerald.

Archmere’s season ended with a 10-6 record. The Hawks (9-5-2) will play fourth-seeded Newark Charter on Saturday at 7 p.m. back at Caravel.
