WILMINGTON — A lot of pressure resulted in no goals in the first quarter for Ursuline, but the Raiders found the net once each in the other three quarters on their way to a 3-0 field hockey victory over St. Elizabeth on Oct. 8 at Serviam Field. It was Ursuline’s fourth win in their last five games.
The Vikings were the home team on the Raiders’ turf, and they earned two penalty corners in the early going, but could not convert. The momentum swung toward Ursuline in the middle stages of the first, but Vikings goalie Dominique Frederique (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish) helped keep the game scoreless.
Ursuline kept the ball throughout most of the second quarter, but a solid St. E’s defense shut down any scoring efforts. There was little the Vikings could do when the Raiders were awarded a penalty stroke with four minutes to go in the half, but the ball sailed high over the net.
Finally, the Raiders cashed in on a penalty corner late to open the scoring. Morgan Westcott took a pass from Rachel Antonio on the inbounds play and found an opening on the left side of the cage with two minutes to go in the half.
Olivia O’Hara added a goal early in the third quarter, with Caroline Lober getting the assist, on a shot that beat Frederique to the short side. Frederique kept the within striking distance with several big saves during the quarter.
The Vikings turned up the offensive pressure to begin the fourth quarter. On their second penalty corner of the quarter, they sent a shot behind Raiders goalie Jessica Kulenguskey (St. John the Beloved Parish), but a defender was backing her up and cleared the ball out of harm’s way. Cameron Aiello added an insurance marker for the Raiders, with the assist to Katherine Layton, with 9:17 remaining.
Ursuline outshot the Vikings, 17-4, and had a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners. Kulenguskey earned her second shutout of the season as the Raiders improved to 4-4. They return to Serviam as the home team on Thursday against Wilmington Charter at 3:45 p.m.
For the Vikings, Frederique finished with 14 saves. St. Elizabeth (3-6) hosts Delaware Military on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Chase Fieldhouse.
