PENNY HILL — Jack Bradley rushed for 196 and two touchdowns to lead Archmere to a workmanlike 28-12 football win over Mount Pleasant on the afternoon of Oct. 10. Mount normally has its home games on Saturday mornings, but this game was moved up a few days to accommodate the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
The Auks stayed mainly with a ground attack against the Green Knights, and they scored twice in the first quarter as they burned minutes off the clock with long drives. They started at their own 45 after the opening kickoff, and after an incomplete pass on first down, they went with the ground attack.
Mike Donovan, Bradley and Christian Wittmeyer all carried as the Auks moved to the Mount 26 on four plays. From there, Donovan went for five and quarterback John Orsini (St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Glen Mills, Pa.) picked up another yard before Donovan gained 11 to make it first and goal at the 9. Three plays later, Donovan covered the final six yards for a touchdown.
Archmere forced a three and out and went right back to work at their own 43. Donovan (St. Mary Magdalen Parish) kept the drive going with 12-yard gain on third and 10. On third and 3 from the Green Knights’ 39, Bradley scurried around the right end and danced along the sideline until he reached the end zone late in the quarter.
Bradley helped set up the next Auks touchdown with an interception midway through the second at the Mount 25. After that play, he caught a pass from Orsini for 11 yards, after which Wittmeyer (Holy Family Parish) and Jack Melvin got it to the 1. Donovan ended that drive with his second score of the afternoon.
The Green Knights got on the board in the final minute of the first half on a 25-yard run around right end by Jase Campbell.
Archmere’s final score came on the team’s first possession of the second half. This also came after an interception, this one by Justin Hartman. Bradley ran for 28 yards on first down to get to the Knights’ 38. He closed out the series with a 15-yard run around right end to make it 28-6 with 7:54 to go in the third.
The Green Knights played solid defense, keeping the Auks from threatening after that touchdown. Unfortunately for them, the Auks were just as stout on the defensive side. The Green Knights were about to take the ball into the end zone on a long pass until the Auks knocked the ball loose and into the end zone, recovering the fumble.
Mount Pleasant did score once more, blocking an Auks punt into the end zone, where Kember Lopez-Sukar fell on the ball.
Donovan had 50 yards on 9 carries with the two touchdowns. Orsini completed 7 passes in 18 attempts for 75 yards. Patrick Bellew led the Auks with 6 tackles, while Wittmeyer, Wyatt Beekley and Frankie Morda each had 5. Archmere (5-1) is home on Oct. 19 against Tower Hill.
Mount Pleasant (4-2) is back at home on Oct. 19 against Red Lion at noon.
