It’s a bit of a light week on the high school sports schedule, but there are a few games that catch the eye. Everything gets started the afternoon of Sept. 16 with field hockey involving Saint Mark’s at 3:30, with Ss. Peter and Paul following at 4.
On the girls’ side, it’s a week of the Catholic schools facing each other. Archmere has two games against its Catholic foes, and Saint Mark’s hosts Padua in what should be an exciting night at Saint Mark’s. In boys’ action, Salesianum football hosts Malvern Prep (Pa.) on a big night at Abessinio Stadium. Saint Mark’s hosts the first Spartan Moonlight Showcase on Saturday as cross country takes the spotlight.
As usual, dates and times are subject to change. In addition, some events require that tickets be purchased, often in advance.

Football
Newark (0-2) at Archmere (2-0), 3:30 p.m. The Auks host a rare Friday home game. The Auks were stunned at Newark last year and would be wise not to underestimate the Yellowjackets despite their start. Archmere is coming off a solid defensive performance against Saint Mark’s.
Red Lion (2-1) at Saint Mark’s (1-1), 7 p.m. The Lions step up in class for the second time this season, and they have had some good battles against the Spartans in recent years. Red Lion is led by junior quarterback Evan Budinger and his powerful arm, although they also have a lot of youth. The Spartans have displayed a formidable running game led by Elijah Burke.
Malvern Prep (Pa.) (2-1) at Salesianum (2-0), 7:30 p.m. The Sals host another powerful foe from Pennsylvania’s Inter-Ac League when the Friars come calling. Malvern is smarting after a loss to Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic, while the Sals have had an extra week to prepare following their win at Smyrna on Sept. 6.
Saturday, Sept. 21
McKean (0-2) vs. St. Elizabeth (0-2), noon at Abessinio Stadium. The Vikings and Highlanders are both looking for their first win of the season. St. Elizabeth has shown an ability to score points, but they will need their defense to come up with a big effort against McKean. The Highlanders have struggled on offense.
