WILMINGTON — Padua’s relentless offensive pressure led to two second-quarter goals, and that was all the scoring in a 2-0 field hockey win over Appoquinimink on Oct. 3 at Chase Fieldhouse. The Pandas snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
The Jaguars had the momentum early, including some first-quarter shots on Padua goalie Taylor Kozink (St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Swedesboro, N.J.), but this afternoon would belong mostly to the Pandas. After a scoreless first, the Pandas got their offense going in the second.
In the first minute of the quarter, Rebekah Haney caught up to a ball that had gotten behind the Appo goalie and her defense, and she redirected it into the open cage. Scoring opportunities were rare in the second thanks to the defense, with the back line making several stops of the Jags in the open field.
The Pandas closed the second quarter the way it had opened. On a restart, Emme Mulvena (St. Mary Magdalen Parish) fired a shot from the top of the scoring circle, finding an opening to the goalie’s right and doubling the lead.
Padua continued with the pressure throughout the second half, and although they were unable to add to their lead, they kept the Jaguars from mounting a comeback. The Pandas earned seven penalty corners in the third. They had several more corners in the fourth before Appo was able to get their shooters free. Kozink made a save late in the fourth, and a second shot rolled wide.
Final statistics were not available Friday morning. Padua (3-6) will host Archmere on Oct. 8 at 3:45 p.m. at the Chase Fieldhouse. Appoquinimink (4-5) visits Delcastle on Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
