BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – Saint Mark’s used a 10-0 first-quarter run to erase an early deficit at Brandywine, and the Spartans clamped down defensively in the second half to secure a 62-33 win on Feb. 5. Saint Mark’s snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
Brandywine found success driving and scoring on runners in the opening minutes as they took a 10-5 lead. Mia Hussnatter (St. John the Beloved Parish) started a 10-0 run for the Spartans with a three-point shot. Daly O’Donoghue (St. Mary of the Assumption Parish) followed the three with an offensive rebound and follow, and Sophia Karch (St. John the Beloved Parish) scored twice in transition after forcing Brandywine turnovers to make it 14-10. O’Donoghue added a free throw before the Bulldogs’ A’kiyah Nuriddin scored to end the run.
The Spartans’ lead grew throughout the second quarter thanks in large part to their defense. Hussnatter scored the first two buckets of the quarter after Bulldogs miscues. Karch had nine points during the quarter. Brandywine’s offense came from freshman Reese Savage, who continually found lanes to the hoop on the way to 11 points in the second.
The Spartans clamped down on Savage in the second half, holding her to one field goal. Meanwhile, they scored the first 11 points of the third to pull away. The final quarter belonged to the reserves, who put up the final nine points of the night.
Karch led the way with 20 points, and she also had six steals. O’Donoghue added 13 points and a dozen rebounds for the double double. Saint Mark’s (6-10) will play at St. Elizabeth at noon on Saturday.
Savage finished with 19 points, and Nuriddin had 11 for the Bulldogs, who fell to 6-11. Brandywine visits district rival Concord on Feb. 12 at 4:45 p.m.
