Saint Francis Hospital’s maternity unit is celebrating its 40th anniversary of serving the city of Wilmington and northern Delaware.

First opening its doors on July 23, 1984, the maternity unit at Saint Francis Hospital has delivered thousands of babies in the 40 years since.

“Our OB/GYN team at Saint Francis Hospital strives to provide exceptional care to mothers and babies in Delaware,” says Karen Turner, nurse manager of the Saint Francis Hospital maternity unit. “After 40 years, we are caring for our community with the same compassion, skill and commitment as always.”

In partnership with other local health systems, Saint Francis Hospital operates the only labor and delivery services in Delaware’s largest city. Saint Francis Hospital is affiliated with nationally renowned Nemours Children’s Hospital for neonatal care.

“More than 300 babies have been born so far this year at Saint Francis Hospital,” says Sue Douglas, an acute care nurse who has worked in the Saint Francis Hospital maternity unit since 1984. “In addition to the high level of care and expertise that we provide, our patients appreciate the compassionate, family atmosphere that we have here on the Saint Francis Hospital maternity unit.”

Coinciding with the maternity unit marking its 40-year anniversary, Saint Francis Hospital—which first opened in 1924—will celebrate its centennial anniversary this October. Learn more here about maternity services at Saint Francis Hospital.
