Ursuline Sister Jeanne Hamilton, who ministered in the Diocese of Wilmington and was a former columnist for The Dialog, died June 19 at Andrus on Hudson in Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. She was 88 and had been a professed member of her congregation for 67 years.
Sister Jeanne, formerly known as Mother Angela Mary, was born in New York and attended the College of New Rochelle and Fordham University. She also earned a degree in Canon Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa, Ontario. She ministered primarily in education, teaching in a number of schools, including Ursuline Academy in Wilmington.
After leaving teaching, she worked in campus ministry at Marist College and Fordham.
After receiving her degree in Canon Law in 1998, she returned to the Diocese of Wilmington as a judge in the Diocesan Tribunal, where she remained until 2011. She also contributed to The Dialog. Also, during her time in Wilmington, she was a community councilor, a trustee of Ursuline Academy, and a teacher in the catechetical office. She also worked with the diocesan diaconate program, according to her province.
After her retirement, Sister Jeanne served in the Ursuline Province development office and in-house service in the community.
Visiting hours were at Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle, N.Y., on June 22. A Mass of Christian was June 23 at 10:30 a.m., with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The funeral liturgy was livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/events/790280472567795/.
