CLAYMONT — Archmere jumped out to a 15-1 lead after one quarter, and the Auks were never in trouble in a 49-17 girls basketball win over St. Georges on Jan. 26 at Moglia Fieldhouse.

Bridget Malloy got the scoring started early with a three-pointer, and Malloy scored again following an offensive rebound by Lucy Oliver. The Auks moved the ball well against the St. Georges press, and Leah Boyer extended the lead to 8-0 with another triple, this time with Malloy getting the assist. The small but vocal student section roared its approval.

Archmere’s defense kept the Hawks from getting good looks, and they limited St. Georges to a single shot on most possessions. Lourdes Saunders hit a free throw with 4:41 left in the first quarter for the Hawks, but the Auks added seven more before the end of the quarter, including another three, this one from Sofia Hoffman.

Oliver and Boyer hurt the Hawks in the second. Oliver hit a triple on her way to a 12-point quarter, and Boyer had the Auks’ other five points.

The Hawks hit a few shots after halftime, but Archmere was firmly in control.

Oliver led the Auks with 18 points, and Boyer had 11. Archmere (8-5) hosts Middletown on Jan. 29 at 6:15 p.m.

Cecilia Cruzado had 6 points for the Hawks, who fell to 5-9. St. Georges is at Concord on Jan. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
