The action for the various high school sports teams at the Catholic schools in the Diocese of Wilmington heats up this week. With no holidays, there are games literally all seven days.

The girls have some high-profile matches on the schedule. Longtime rivals will meet on the volleyball court and the field hockey pitch. Speaking of field hockey, the 25th annual Turf Bowl will be held Friday-Sunday at Rullo Stadium at the University of Delaware, and all five Catholic high schools will be taking part. Archmere meets Saint Mark’s in the final game of the weekend.

Maryland plays girls soccer in the fall, and Ss. Peter and Paul gets their season going on Tuesday.

In boys sports, there are a few soccer games worth noting, including Salesianum hosting a New Jersey power on Saturday night at Abessinio. Saint Mark’s takes center stage in football, welcoming back the 1974 state championship team on Friday as Archmere pays a visit.

For games that require tickets, several schools require that they be purchased online ahead of time. Also, dates and times are always subject to change.

Football

Friday, Sept. 13

St. Elizabeth (0-1) at Indian River, 6 p.m. The Vikings make the long drive south to meet one of the contenders in Class 1A. Despite the distance between the schools, these teams have developed an intriguing rivalry over the past few seasons. St. Elizabeth is working a number of new faces into its offense, while the Indians bring back an experienced backfield of Davon Handy and Jayvion Chandler.

Archmere (1-0) at Saint Mark’s (1-0), 7 p.m. Saint Mark’s has moved up to Class 3A, but the Spartans and Auks, who remain in 2A, always put on an entertaining show. Both teams picked up wins over the weekend while working a bunch of new faces into their offenses. Saint Mark’s is honoring its 1974 state championship team at this game. Expect a big crowd at the Graveyard.
