Registration continues for fall sports for Catholic Youth Ministry. CYM sponsors six fall sports for students in grades two through high school.
Aaron Frye, the athletic coordinator for CYM, said registration is available at the organization’s website, www.cdowcym.org. Parents or guardians should click on the clipboard at the top of the page, which will show a link to register or login if a family has registered in the past.
All students in a Catholic grade school or a parish religious-education program, or children who are registered parishioners in the diocese are eligible. Non-Catholic youth are welcome as long as they live within the geographical boundaries of the Diocese of Wilmington. All young people are encouraged to participate even if their parish does not offer the desired sport.
According to the CYM office, “We offer opportunities for athletes to participate in athletics while promoting and fostering environments conducive to positive Christian attitudes and healthy physical play.”
CYM offers the following sports: coed flag football for grades 2-4; tackle football for boys in grades 4-8; coed soccer for grades 3-8; girls volleyball for grades 4-12; coed cross country for grades 3-8; and cheerleading for grades 3-8.
There are some things to note. Tackle football is played on Sundays, normally on a local high school turf field. Athletic trainers are usually on site. For volleyball, girls who play for their high school team cannot also participate in CYM. The seasons for all sports begin the weekend after Labor Day and end in late October to mid-November.
Adults who are interested in coaching are also invited to register. All coaching candidates will have to complete a background check, diocesan training known as “For the Sake of God’s Children,” and concussion training.
