CLAYMONT – Delaware Military Academy exploded for 16 hits, including five for Nicolas Hertzfeld, in a 17-3 win over Archmere in Diamond State Athletic Conference baseball on April 6.

Hertzfeld set the tone for the afternoon, leading off with a double to left field off Auks starter Emmett Bice. After a walk to Kevin Williams and a sacrifice bunt, Zach McCloskey drove both runners in with a single to left.

The Auks got one of those back off Seahawks hurler Colin Smith in the second. Mike Dellose opened the inning with a base hit up the middle, and Conner Bartholomew followed with an infield single. On that play, Dellose advanced to third on a throwing error, and he scored on a suicide squeeze by Anthony Mallamaci.

The Seahawks responded, putting up five runs in the third as they sent 11 batters to the plate. A Smith double was followed by a hit batter. Smith scored on a groundout, and an errant pickoff throw allowed another to come home. Hertzfeld picked up an RBI with a single, and Archmere brought Jack Nielsen to the mound in relief. An infield single loaded the bases, and consecutive walks plated the final two runs of the inning.

In the bottom of the frame, the Auks loaded the bases with one out courtesy of a single, hit batter and walk. A fielder’s choice brought courtesy runner Edwin Mousley home, Archmere loaded them again, and Michael Mallamaci, the courtesy runner for catcher Tommy Alexander, scored on a walk. The Auks left the bases loaded.

After stretching the lead to six with a pair in the fifth, the Seahawks put it out of reach with eight more in the seventh. Jonathan Golebiowski opened things with a towering triple to right-center field, and the next four batters followed with by going single, triple, single and single. Hertzfeld scored two more on a double, his fifth hit, and Golebiowski ended the onslaught by smashing a no-doubt home run to right.

For the Auks, Nielsen had two of their four hits, and he scored a run. Archmere did rebound later Friday night to defeat Tower Hill, evening its record to 2-2 for the season. The Auks travel to DSAC foe Conrad on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Along with his five hits, Hertzfeld scored three times. Smith and Dominic Petrucci each had three hits, and every player in the Seahawks’ lineup scored at least one run. DMA (2-3) is back in action on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., visiting Tower Hill.
