Keep up with Wilmington group in Guatemala on Facebook and Twitter

Brother Chris Posch, the Franciscan priest who is director of the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry, and six delegates from the diocese will begin a 10-day visit to Wilmington’s sister diocese of San Marcos in Guatemala.  The two dioceses recently celebrated the 10- year anniversary of their solidarity partnership with a Mass and luncheon held at St. Margaret of Scotland in Glasgow.

The Wilmington delegation will visit to medical clinics and churches in El Rodeo, San Pablo, and El Quetzal as well as areas ravaged by earthquakes last November.

Delegates include Kelley and Mallory Freebury of St. Catherine of Siena, Wilmington; Xylene Graves of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Bear; and Stephanie Gallagher of St. Margaret of Scotland, Nada Jones from Holy Family in Newark, and also Emily Carpenter, a teacher at Christ the Teacher School, Newark.

Annual food drive benefits nonprofits

On Feb. 2-3, the Knights of Columbus will hold their 17th annual “Soup-er Bowl” to benefit nonprofit groups in Delaware and Cecil County, Md. Canned good and other nonperishable food can be dropped off at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, or the University of Delaware Center for Disabilities Studies, 461 Wyoming Road, Newark, beginning Jan. 7. Monetary donations also may be made to your local Knights of Columbus Council.

All of the food will stay in Delaware or Cecil County with nonprofits that have existing food-assistance programs. Examples are Sojourners Place, Emmanuel Dining Room, the Latin American Center, West End Neighborhood House and Immaculate Conception Parish.

Guatemalan visitors encourage immigrants to keep their faith and culture

 WILMINGTON — A Solidarity Partnership has linked Catholics in the dioceses of San Marcos, Guatemala, and Wilmington since 2003. That connection was renewed when a Guatemalan priest and sister nine days here at the end of April and said the Catholic communities are more alike than people might think.

“The two dioceses share pastoral and social ministries. We have different realities, but we share our ministries,” said Sister Bernarda Rojas, director of diocesan social ministry in San Marcos.
