Garcia scores four as Archmere posts 9-0 soccer shutout

CLAYMONT – Archmere’s Anna Garcia scored in the fourth minute, and the Auks were never in trouble in a 9-0 shutout of Red Lion Christian in Diamond State Athletic Conference girls soccer April 23.

After Dara Dawson beat Red Lion keeper Maya Muldrow to the far side in the 13th minute to double the Auks’ lead, it was Garcia’s half. The freshman put the game out of reach with three goals in four minutes; she finished with those four tallies. Read more »

St. Elizabeth star Penny Welsh among Delaware Hall of Fame inductees

The girls’ basketball program at St. Elizabeth High School has a long and proud history, one that includes five state championships. Next month, the centerpiece of the first champion will take her place among Delaware’s all-time great sports figures.

Penny Welsh, a two-time first-team all-state selection for the Vikings, is being inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame during a banquet on May 22. She is one of nine inductees.

Tomovich’s eighth-inning triple lifts St. Mark’s past Salesianum, 7-5

WILMINGTON – St. Mark’s surrendered a four-run lead against Salesianum when the rivals met on the baseball diamond on April 20, but a triple off the bat of J.T. Tomovich scored two runs and lifted the Spartans to a 7-5 win in eight innings.

Salesianum trailed, 5-1, after four innings, but they fought back and tied the score in the bottom of the seventh. Spartans reliever Brian Gilardi got the first two outs, but Sals catcher Joe Setting doubled to left field. The next hitter, Anthony Frechette, sent a fly ball into short left field. With the leftfielder playing deep to guard against extra bases, the ball fell escaped the reach of the Spartans’ shortstop, and Setting scored. Read more »

Stewart scores twice for Caravel in 3-1 soccer win over Ursuline

WILMINGTON – Caravel’s soccer team took a little while to get untracked on April 19 against Ursuline, but a goal late in the first half served as a springboard to a 3-1 win at Serviam Field. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Buccaneers.

The Raiders controlled the early going against Caravel, getting a pair of shots on Bucs keeper Sydney Keld in the first seven minutes, but neither team could put together a serious offensive opportunity. The best chance for either squad came in the 15th minute, when Ursuline’s Allison Olmstead sent a shot off the far post to the left of Keld. Read more »

Bats come alive for St. Elizabeth girls in big softball win over Glasgow

GLASGOW – St. Elizabeth’s softball team brought out the hitting sticks early on April 18 at Glasgow, scoring three times in the first inning and putting the game out of reach in the third in a 24-4 win. It was the Vikings’ fourth straight victory.

The lead was 4-1 when the Vikings stepped to the plate in the decisive third inning. Before it ended, they would send 13 batters to the plate and score nine times. The frame started with McKenzie Sweeney drilling a triple past the rightfielder. Miranda Wohner followed with a run-scoring single up the middle. She stole second and scored on a fielding error. Appoquinimink caps softball comeback with seventh-inning run to best Archmere

CLAYMONT – Appoquinimink scored three times in the final two innings to complete a 4-3 comeback against Archmere in nonconference softball April 17 in Claymont. Mallory Weir brought home the eventual winning run on a groundout in the top of the seventh inning to help the Lady Jaguars remain undefeated on the season. Read more »
