Bishop Koenig made his annual visit to Mount Aviat Academy in Childs, Md., Dec. 6 and celebrated Mass with students.

His visit included some time with one of the newest additions to the school curriculum.

Students joined the bishop for the blessing of Hammond Hive, a beehive named for the late Harry Hammond, longtime member and founding chair of Mount Aviat’s board of trustees.

“It was such a beautiful event and we were blessed to have many of Mr. Hammond’s family and friends with us for the occasion,” said Charlene Nichols, admissions director at Mount Aviat. “Mr. Hammond was a parent, grandparent, and chairman of our board for many, many years. But mostly, he was a great friend to the sisters and our school.”

Kindergarten students performed “One Small Voice.” Guests received a small gift of honey from the Sisters’ St. Ambrose Apiary.

Mount Aviat launched a bee education program, establishing a colony of bees last spring.
