WILMINGTON — The gymnasium at St. John the Beloved School was filled with children moving quickly, but they weren’t playing basketball. Instead, it was their eyes and arms that did the moving as they scanned the cards on the tables in front of them in search of bingo. It was also pajama day as the school celebrated Catholic Schools Week on Feb. 1.

Yes, it was bingo day at St. John the Beloved, with the principal, Richard Hart, up on the stage reading out the numbers and librarian Diane Tobin filling in the big board as they were called out.

The winners approached the stage and, after their winning cards were verified, selected a prize of either a small toy or a bag of chips or another snack.

The smell of pizza also filled the room. After the third through fifth grades departed the hall, a small army of volunteers filled tables full of paper plates with slices.
