This November voters across the country will cast their ballots in national and local elections. Maryland is one of several states that will ask voters to enshrine abortion into their state constitution.
This is an important time for us to reiterate our commitment to the protection of all human life. We oppose the “Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment” as it contradicts the fundamental principles of respect for human dignity and the inherent right to life.
Our opposition to this initiative is rooted in our unwavering concern for the well-being of women and children. Abortion not only ends the life of an innocent child but also poses significant risks to the physical, emotional and spiritual health of women.
PERPETUATES THROWAWAY CULTURE
Enshrining abortion into Maryland’s constitution would further perpetuate a “throwaway” culture that devalues human life and fails to provide adequate support and alternatives for women facing difficult decisions regarding their pregnancies.
Pope Francis consistently reminds us that “…people are never to be thrown out. The disadvantaged cannot be thrown away. Every person is a sacred and unique gift, no matter what their age or condition is. Let us always respect and promote life! Let us not throw life away.”
DIVERTS RESOURCES FROM WOMEN’S WELL-BEING
Enshrining abortion in the constitution would divert attention and resources away from broader efforts to promote women’s well-being and address the root causes of abortion. Instead of a sole focus on access to abortion, it is necessary to advocate for comprehensive solutions that provide women with access to healthcare, resources for families, and education and job opportunities.
We must foster a culture of life where every person is valued and supported, and where women facing difficult decisions regarding pregnancy and parenthood feel respected and empowered.
RISKS HEALTHCARE WORKER RIGHTS
By enshrining abortion in the constitution, we risk undermining existing protections for religious freedom, conscience rights, and the rights of healthcare providers
to practice according to their beliefs.
LIMITS ABILITY TO RESPOND TO NEEDS
A constitutional amendment severely limits legislative flexibility and prevents elected officials from enacting laws that respond to changing circumstances or new evidence related to abortion policy and the protection of women.
The unfortunate reality is that nothing regarding abortion in Maryland would change if this amendment were defeated. Sadly, Maryland has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the country, allowing for abortion at any stage of pregnancy, including right up to the moment of birth.
REJECT BALLOT INITIATIVE
We stand in solidarity with women and children, and we reject the notion that abortion is a solution to the challenges faced by women in crisis situations. It is essential that we pursue solutions that include compassionate support, resources, and alternatives to abortion for women facing difficult circumstances.
We urge voters to reject this ballot initiative and stand with us in upholding the sanctity of all human life, safeguarding conscience rights, and standing in solidarity with women and children in need. Together, let us work towards building a culture of life in which every person is valued, cherished and protected.

Un mensaje de los obispos católicos de Maryland
Este noviembre, los votantes de todo el país emitirán sus votos en las elecciones nacionales y locales. Maryland es uno de varios estados que pedirá a los votantes consagrar el aborto en su constitución estatal.
Es un momento importante para reiterar nuestro compromiso con la protección de toda vida humana. Nos oponemos a la “Enmienda del Derecho a la Libertad Reproductiva” ya que contradice los principios fundamentales de respeto por la dignidad humana y el derecho inherente a la vida.
Nuestra oposición a esta iniciativa se basa en nuestra preocupación inquebrantable por el bienestar de mujeres y niños. El aborto no solo termina la vida de un niño inocente, sino que también representa riesgos significativos para la salud física, emocional y espiritual de
las mujeres.
PERPETUA LA CULTURA DE LO “DESECHABLE”
Consagrar el aborto en la constitución de Maryland perpetuaría aún más una cultura de lo “desechable” que devalúa la vida humana y no proporciona apoyo ni alternativas adecuadas para las mujeres que enfrentan decisiones difíciles respecto a sus embarazos.
El Papa Francisco nos recuerda constantemente que “…las personas no se pueden tirar, ¡los desfavorecidos no se pueden tirar! Cada uno es un don sagrado, y cada uno es un don único, a cualquier edad y en cualquier condición. ¡Respetemos y promovamos la vida siempre! ¡No descartemos la vida!”
DESVIA RECURSOS EL BIENESTAR DE LAS MUJERES
Consagrar el aborto en la constitución desviaría la atención y los recursos de los esfuerzos más amplios para promover el bienestar de las mujeres y abordar las causas fundamentales del aborto. En lugar de centrarse únicamente en el acceso al aborto, es necesario abogar por soluciones integrales que proporcionen a las mujeres acceso a la atención médica, recursos para las familias, y oportunidades educativas y laborales.
Debemos fomentar una cultura de la vida donde cada persona sea valorada y apoyada, y donde las mujeres que enfrentan decisiones difíciles respecto al embarazo
y la maternidad se sientan respetadas y empoderadas.
RIESGOS DERECHOS DE LOS PROVEEDORES DE ATENCIÓN MÉDICA
Al consagrar el aborto en la constitución, corremos el riesgo de debilitar las protecciones existentes para la libertad religiosa, los derechos de conciencia y los derechos de los proveedores de atención médica para practicar según sus creencias.
LIMITA LA CAPACIDAD DE RESPONDER A LAS NECESIDADES
Una enmienda constitucional limita severamente la flexibilidad legislativa e impide que los funcionarios electos promulguen leyes que respondan a circunstancias cambiantes o nuevas evidencias relacionadas con la política de aborto y la protección de las mujeres.
La triste realidad es que nada cambiaría respecto al aborto en Maryland si esta enmienda fuera derrotada. Tristemente, Maryland tiene algunas de las leyes de aborto más permisivas del país, permitiendo el aborto en cualquier etapa del embarazo, incluido justo hasta el momento del nacimiento.
Nos solidarizamos con las mujeres y los niños, y rechazamos la idea de que el aborto es una solución a los desafíos que enfrentan las mujeres en situaciones de crisis. Es esencial que busquemos soluciones que incluyan apoyo compasivo, recursos y alternativas al aborto para mujeres en circunstancias difíciles.
RECHAZAR ESTA INICIATIVA DE VOTACIÓN
Instamos a los votantes a rechazar esta iniciativa de votación y a unirse a nosotros en la defensa de la santidad de toda vida humana, la protección de los derechos de conciencia y el apoyo a las mujeres y niños necesitados. Juntos, trabajemos hacia la construcción de una cultura
