GREENVILLE – The Archmere Auks’ girls basketball team used defense to beat the Tatnall Hornets, 41-26, on Feb. 7. The Auks were looking to bounce back from a tough loss on Monday to No. 5 Howard.

They started fast as Madison Stewart hit a pair of field goals and Emma McCann hit a deep three-pointer. Archmere finished the first quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 14-7 lead.

The Auks’ defense was all over the Hornets to start the second quarter, and Catherine McGonigle and Bella Angiullo each hit a three-pointer as the Auks extended the lead to 24-10. The Hornets got a 3 pointer from Erica Hager, but the Auks took a 28-15 lead at halftime.

The defense just kept up the pressure in the second half, and Stewart and McGonigle both scored old-fashioned three-point plays. It was 34-19 Archmere after three quarters.

The Auks didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter but shot seven of 10 from the charity stripe to pick up their 11th win of the season. McGonigle lead the Auks with 11 points, while Stewart added nine. They host St. Elizabeth on Tuesday for a 6:15 pm start.

The Hornets (7-8) were led by eighth-grader Emma Kirby, who finished with eight points. They travel to Friends on Saturday for an early 11 a.m. tip.
