St. Elizabeth High School girls successfully close out basketball regular season: Photo gallery

WILMINGTON — St. Elizabeth came out firing and playing stifling defense in the final regular-season girls basketball game on Feb. 20, and the Vikings eased to a 50-27 win at the St. E Center. The Vikings finished the regular season with a 17-3 record and await their seeding in the state tournament, which begins next week.

St. E’s got going following a steal by ZaMylah Seda-Owens, who took a steal and went coast to coast for a layup to open the scoring. Following a five-second violation on the Cavaliers, Makayla Sullivan added a three-pointer. Leading scorer Ericka Huggins got on the board a bit later in the quarter, taking a pass from Taniyah Reese for her first field goal, then hitting a corner three as the lead grew to 14-0.

Bria Harding his a pair of free throws with 2:47 left in the first to get Middletown on the board, but at the end of the quarter, the Vikings led, 20-4.

The Vikings began substituting liberally in the second quarter as their lead grew. They continued to play solid defense, often holding the Cavs to a single chance on offense, but Middletown’s #2 was able to drive the baseline for the team’s first field goal late in the second.

Huggins finished with 21 to lead the Vikings. Seda-Owens had 11.

Final statistics were not available for Middletown, which fell to 12-7. The Cavaliers visit Howard on Wednesday at 4:45 p.m. in their regular-season finale.
