The St. Thomas More Society of the Diocese of Wilmington, a group of local legal professionals, will hold its annual Red Mass on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Wilmington.
Bishop Koenig will be the celebrant. Homilist will be retired Archbishop Joseph Kurtz.
Archbishop Kurtz was named the fourth archbishop and ninth bishop of the Archdiocese of Louisville on June 12, 2007. He earned bachelor (1968) and master of divinity (1972) degrees from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary near Philadelphia and a master’s degree in social work from the Marywood School of Social Work in Scranton, Pa., in 1976.
Archbishop Kurtz was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Allentown on March 18, 1972. Before becoming Bishop of Knoxville, Archbishop Kurtz served for 27 years in the Diocese of Allentown, Pennsylvania, in charge of social services, diocesan administration and parish ministry.
He is former president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
All are welcome to the Red Mass, but members of the legal bench and bar are especially encouraged as this longstanding tradition offers an opportunity to gather in faith, fellowship and prayer “as we ask God’s guidance and blessings upon all who serve in the law, government and the administration of justice.”
