Pandas dominate in girls Division I soccer showdown

HOCKESSIN – In a showdown April 5 between the top two Division I girls soccer teams in Delaware, No. 1 showed there is still a gap between them and everybody else. On a cold, windy day at the Hockessin Soccer Club, Padua controlled the play from the opening tip in a 2-0 win over second-ranked Caesar Rodney.

Emily Ryjewski continued her hot start to the season, getting credit for both second-half goals, although one was an own goal by the Riders. On that one, in the 52nd minute, the play began with a direct kick by Padua from about 25 yards out. That was blocked, but the ball ended up, as so many did on the afternoon, on the foot of Mackenzie Scully. Read more »

Padua prevails in battle of soccer unbeatens

NEWARK — Two of Delaware’s best girls soccer teams met Thursday afternoon, but one clearly emerged as a team to beat in the upcoming state tournament. Padua controlled play from the opening whistle and defeated Archmere, 7-0, at Independence School, handing the Auks their first setback of the season.

The undefeated Pandas, ranked first in Division I, attacked the Auks the entire game, and it didn’t take long for them to get on the scoreboard. Sophomore Arryana Daniels blasted a shot past Archmere keeper Kyra Giakas in the third minute. Mackenzie Scully found Daniels streaking down the right side, and Daniels hit the far corner. Freshmen score twice as Pandas take third straight soccer title

SMYRNA – Two goals in a dominant first half were enough to propel Padua Academy to its third straight state soccer championship, as the Pandas defeated Caesar Rodney High School, 3-1, Monday night at Smyrna High School.

It was the second time in the last three seasons that these teams met for the championship. Padua won in 2012 in double overtime. They also met in the semifinal round last year, with Padua surviving, 4-2, on penalty kicks. Read more »
