WILMINGTON – Joe Wright just finished his fourth season as a member of the coaching staff at St. Elizabeth High School, his first as the head man. He wasn’t looking to leave – and wouldn’t have – unless one specific position opened up. And it did.

Wright was named this week as the new head coach at St. Mark’s High School, from which he graduated in 2004. He replaces his former coach, John Wilson, who stepped down after 13 seasons at the helm. Read more »

PIKE CREEK — For St. Mark’s to make its first Division II playoff field this year, the Spartans are going to need to find a way to win the close games that eluded them last season. Four of the team’s six losses were by five points or fewer. Coach John Wilson said during the preseason that experience will help turn those results into wins.

Second-year starting quarterback Billy Sullivan said the players’ conditioning is better this year, which will help them close games. The objective has not changed, and that is to win every week.

Spartans football comeback falls just short vs. Newark

By

MILLTOWN – Newark raced out to a 19-0 lead over homestanding St. Mark’s on Friday night, then held off a furious comeback attempt by the Spartans. The Yellow Jackets, the preseason No. 8 in Division I football, escaped “The Graveyard” with a 19-14 victory in the season opener.

The Spartans, ranked between Nos. 1 and 3 in various preseason Division II rankings, trailed by five entering the fourth quarter and took over after stopping Newark on downs at midfield with 8:08 to go. They steadily progressed toward the end zone, including converting a fourth and two on a run by senior Peyton Schultz. Quarterback Billy Sullivan, starting his first varsity game, kept the drive alive again on third-and-seven from the Jackets’ 37 with a screen pass to Schultz, who turned it into a 18-yard gain. PIKE CREEK – Hopes are high at St. Mark’s as the football team looks to leave an impression in its final season (for now) as a Division I program. The Spartans are coming off a 7-4 season in 2013, which included a trip to the playoffs, where they lost a tight 28-24 decision to Dover.

Seven starters return on offense, including the entire offensive line, but several skill position players graduated. Senior Matt Williams was the leading candidate to start at quarterback, but he will miss some games as he recovers from a torn meniscus. Coach John Wilson said senior Connor Eastep is the likely starter until then. Joining him in the backfield is senior running back Markquise Normand. Read more »
