Five-run fifth carries Sals past Sussex Tech in first game of twinbill

WILMINGTON – Salesianum shut down Sussex Tech’s potent offense and broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning in a 8-4 nonconference baseball win on April 18 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. It was the first of a pair of games for the Sals on the day; they defeated St. Mark’s in the nightcap.

The Sals, who were the visiting team despite playing just a few miles from their Broom Street campus, did not waste any time getting on the board. Walks to Josh Maguire and John Andreoli, followed by an error, loaded the bases with no outs. Tech starter Brady Parks struck out Joe Setting, but Zach Gwynn followed with a single to left field that scored two runs. Sals stage late comeback to defeat baseball power Caravel

WILMINGTON – Salesianum scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Caravel, 6-5, in nonconference baseball April 5. The Sals snapped a two-game losing streak in their third straight contest against a team ranked in the top five in the state.

The Sals scored single runs in each of the first three innings, with Joe Setting, Zack Miller and Alex Hinton driving in runs with singles. Caravel tied the game in the top of the fourth, as Alex Barker drove in a pair with a single to right field. He took second on a groundout and scored on a base hit by Aaron Holiday.

The Buccaneers, who were coming off a loss to Roman Catholic of Philadelphia, scored twice more in the fifth inning to take the two-run lead. Salesianum bounced back in their half of the sixth with three, including another run batted in for Miller.

Jack Fiala retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings for the win. The Sals (3-2) host Cape Henlopen, another top-10 team, Saturday at 1 p.m. Caravel fell to 3-1; the Bucs are back in action on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at William Penn Charter (Pa.).

Appo’s Steckline shuts down Sals’ offense

WILMINGTON – Senior Ryan Steckline threw five shutout innings, striking out eight as the third-ranked Appoquinimink beat No. 7 Salesianum, 6-0, on March 30. Steckline also had two hits to help his cause while limiting the Sals’ potent offense to three hits. Read more »
