Catholic schools’ 2017 roll call: Diocesan schools adding ‘recruitment and retention’ efforts to strong ‘faith and academics’ mission

The number of students enrolled in Catholic schools declined by 285 from last year, according to the diocesan schools office, and while that is a cause for concern, the superintendent and several principals said the figures are only part of Catholic education.

The numbers are recorded annually using the enrollment as of Sept. 30. This year, 9,799 children are enrolled in Catholic education — including parish early education programs — compared with 10,084 in 2016-17.

Most of the schools are within a few students of last year’s numbers, while some have seen significant drops. A number of schools have seen increases. Read more »

St. Ann School welcomes furry green visitor

WILMINGTON — Students at St. Ann’s School got to travel back in time on Feb. 7 with the help of a special friend. The Phillie Phanatic visited Wilmington to help tell the story in his book, “The Phillie Phanatic’s Philadelphia Story.”

The Phanatic came to St. Ann’s because the fifth grade performed superbly in the “Phanatic About Reading” challenge. Lots of red was visible in the gymnasium when the furry green visitor from the Galapagos Islands entered to loud applause and cheering. Read more »

Commentary: Celebrating Catholic Schools Week

Super Bowl 50 is surely destined to be an extravaganza like none other. Each year the annual clash of the best NFL teams generates both TV commercials and a halftime show that draw as much attention as the game itself.

In many ways Catholic Schools Week is the halftime event of the school year. It occurs in the final week of January and offers an opportunity to show the best of Catholic education. It’s not just what glitters in that week that matters; rather, it’s that the week highlights what happens in Catholic schools every day. St. Mark’s principal Ripken to return to diocesan office in July

WILMINGTON – Carol Ripken, who has been principal of St. Mark’s High School since June 2012, will return to her previous post as associate superintendent of the Catholic Schools Office effective July 1, superintendent Louis De Angelo announced Monday.

Ripken said the decision to leave the principal’s position left her with “mixed emotions.” Read more »
