Ravens’ best season ends a point short in state semifinals

NEWARK – O’Koye Parker hit a free throw with 2.4 seconds remaining on the clock to life 19th-seeded Caravel past No. 2 St. Thomas More, 48-47, in the semifinal round of the boys’ state basketball tournament March 9 at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Buccaneers will advance to meet Smyrna for the title on Saturday.

Sals’ season ends as second-half comeback falls short

WILMINGTON – Caravel watched a 10-point lead get cut to one in the last minute, but the 19th-seeded Buccaneers were able to hold on for a 60-53 upset win over No. 3 Salesianum in a DIAA second-round playoff game on March 3. The sold-out battle was Salesianum’s lone home loss of the season.

The Sals came out firing, as Jack Brown hit a three-pointer, and his brother Paul drained three field goals to give the hosts a quick 9-0 lead. It was 11-3 at the end of the first quarter. Read more »

Dockery scores 22 as Vikings pick up tough road win at Caravel

BEAR – St. Elizabeth boys’ basketball team built up a 12-point lead with just over two minutes to go in a nonconference game Feb. 2 at Caravel, and the Vikings made enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for a 65-59 win over the Buccaneers. Read more »

St. Mark’s comeback attempt falls just short at Caravel

BEAR – St. Mark’s had gone through five of the most difficult minutes of their season at the opening of the third quarter of their game Jan. 29 at Caravel. The Spartans were bit by the turnover bug, losing possession the first six times they had the ball after halftime. The Buccaneers took advantage, turning a halftime tie into an eight-point lead, then holding on for a 43-30 nonconference boys basketball win.

St. Mark’s had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but the Spartans were unable to get a shot off following a missed free throw by Caravel. Read more »

Spartans return from Florida, continue winning ways vs. Caravel

MILLTOWN – St. Mark’s boys basketball coach Nick Sanna isn’t real fond of roller coasters, so naturally when his team traveled to Disney World for a tournament last week, his players wouldn’t rest until the coach rode one. “They actually got me on a roller coaster. I was scared to death, but I survived it, luckily,” Sanna said Monday night after the Spartans played their first game back in Delaware.

The contest, against Caravel, was a sort of roller coaster in itself, but St. Mark’s was standing tall when it ended. After setting the pace in the first half and taking a 13-point lead into intermission, St. Mark’s watched as Caravel rapidly cut the deficit. St. Mark’s, however, regained its composure and went on to a 59-39 win over the Buccaneers in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Read more »
