Vikings cool off after fast start, fall to Caravel in girls semifinals

NEWARK – Third-seeded Caravel advanced to its third girls basketball state championship game in five years after defeating No. 7 St. Elizabeth, 44-36, on March 8 at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Buccaneers will face the top seed, Ursuline, on Friday at 7 p.m., also at the Bob, in a rematch of the 2015 final. Bucs senior Grace Lange, who was a sophomore when Caravel fell to Ursuline two years ago, led the way with a double-double, collecting 12 points and 12 rebounds. Read more »

Vikings girls pick up hoops win over top-five foe

WILMINGTON – The St. Elizabeth Vikings girls basketball team has played the toughest schedule in the state so far, and on Jan. 13 they defeated third-ranked Caravel 50-49 at the St E Center.

The Vikings, ranked fifth in the state, got the win they were looking for to improve to 4-5 on the season. Alexis Lee scored 13 second-half points and the team’s 1-3-1 zone defense slowed down the Buccaneers three-point shooting. Read more »

Despite losses, St. Thomas More basketball teams have bright days ahead

NEWARK – The most successful seasons for both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams at St. Thomas More came to an end over the weekend at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Ravens’ boys, seeded 14th, lost on March 6 to St. Georges Tech, 45-39, while the fifth-seeded girls fell to Concord, 60-47, the day before.

The boys, fresh off an upset of the third seed, Dover, fell behind early, 5-0, but went on a 14-4 run and led at the end of the first period, 14-9. That run included three-pointers by Alvin West and Greg Bloodsworth. Another triple by Bloodsworth and two putbacks by big man Aaron Scott fueled a 12-4 start to the second quarter, but the Hawks scored the final four points of the half and trailed, 26-17, at intermission.
