NEWARK – Ursuline displayed an efficient offense and its usual smothering defense and was never threatened in capturing the school’s 17th state girls basketball championship on March 10 at the Bob Carpenter Center. A 15-0 run spanning nearly five minutes in the first quarter gave the Raiders the cushion they needed on the way to a 54-32 win in front of 1,454 fans, many of them wearing red and black.

It was the Raiders’ third-straight championship. They also defeated Caravel for the 2015 title. Read more »

NEWARK — One Catholic school defended its crown, while another regained the top spot after a year away at the 2017 DIAA state swimming and diving championships on Feb. 25 at the Rawstrom Natatorium at the University of Delaware.

It was a repeat performance for Ursuline, which won back-to-back titles for the first time since 1986 and ’87. The Raiders received two wins from senior Marie Dickson, who captured both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke. She was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay quartet that closed the event with a win. Dickson swam the opening leg and was followed by Abigail Poole, Allison Thomas and Heidi Dickson. Sals dominant on way to seventh straight state soccer championship

SMYRNA – It was a tale of two halves in the state Division I soccer championship match Nov. 19 at Smyrna High School, and the Salesianum side wrote both stories. On a cold, windy and rainy night in central Delaware, the top-ranked Sals scored a goal with the rain and wind at their backs, then played even better with the elements in their faces on the way to a 2-0 win over Appoquinimink.

The win gave Salesianum its seventh straight state championship, 13th in the past 15 years, and 16th overall. The Sals finished the season with a record of 16-1-1. The only loss came to Boulder (Colo.) in the second game of a two-day trip to Colorado, and the tie was against St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.), one of the best teams in the country. Read more »

SMYRNA – Salesianum needed a full game and then some to defeat Cape Henlopen to advance to the state championship boys soccer match, and on Saturday night in Smyrna, it looked for a while like the Sals might require more than the regulation 80 minutes against Charter. But a heads-up play in the 53rd minute by sophomore striker Gavin Ford was enough to ensure that extra minutes would not be necessary, as the Sals defeated the Force, 2-0, at Williams Stadium for their sixth straight state title. Padua dominates at state Division I track meet, wins 16th state title

By

Despite losing the best sprinter in Delaware for much of the meet, Padua Academy had no trouble defending its Division I outdoor track and field state championship May 16 at the new Dover High School. The Pandas outdistanced their nearest competitor, Middletown, by a wide margin, collecting 199 points to the Cavaliers’ 76.

Maiya Dendy, the all-state runner headed to the University of South Carolina next year, was hobbled by a hamstring injury that may have cost her wins in two events, but the Pandas were plenty deep enough to overcome the injury. Dendy did manage two victories, in the 400-meter run and as the anchor of Padua’s 4×100 relay team (with Cameron Lucey, Darby Deutsch and Jordan Sobolesky). Read more »

Freshmen score twice as Pandas take third straight soccer title

For The Dialog

SMYRNA – Two goals in a dominant first half were enough to propel Padua Academy to its third straight state soccer championship, as the Pandas defeated Caesar Rodney High School, 3-1, Monday night at Smyrna High School.

It was the second time in the last three seasons that these teams met for the championship. Padua won in 2012 in double overtime. They also met in the semifinal round last year, with Padua surviving, 4-2, on penalty kicks. Read more »

Sals edge St. Mark’s in overtime soccer title game

By

Staff reporter

BEAR – St. Mark’s had controlled the pace of play throughout much of Saturday’s state championship soccer game against Salesianum, and the Spartans appeared headed to their first title since 2001. The clock was stopped, as the referee was keeping track of extra time on the field at Caravel Academy. With a 2-1 lead, the Spartans remained aggressive, and their fans prepared to celebrate.

“Come on, blow the whistle,” St. Mark’s coach Dan Swasey said to himself on the sideline.
