The first month of the new year comes to an end this week with several high school battles worth watching. It kicks off Monday night with the ladies of Padua making the short trip to Ursuline for their latest basketball conflict. The two schools battle in the pool later in the week.
Girls
Basketball
Monday
Padua at Ursuline (4-7), 7:15 p.m. Then neighbors and rivals get together for the second time this season. When they met in December, the Pandas erased a big early deficit to take a second-half lead, but the Raiders bounced back for the victory.
Tuesday
Archmere (7-6) at Red Lion (4-9), 4 p.m.
Caravel (8-5) at St. Elizabeth (10-2), 7:15 p.m. Caravel’s record is deceiving. The Buccaneers have played an extremely difficult showcase schedule, taking on some teams of national acclaim. They mix the experience of Sasha Marvel and Kendra Warren with young guns like India Johnston. The Vikings have played very good basketball lately and feature some weapons of their own, including Ber’Nyah Mayo and Julie McCarron.
Wednesday
Salisbury School at Ss. Peter and Paul (0-9), 5 p.m.
Thursday
Padua at Caravel, 7:15 p.m.
Friday
Holly Grove Christian at Ss. Peter and Paul, 4 p.m.
St. Thomas More (9-1) at Salisbury Christian, 5 p.m.
Concord (4-10) at Archmere, 5:30 p.m.
Conrad (8-5) at Ursuline, 7:15 p.m.
Saturday
St. Mark’s (6-8) at Wilmington Charter (9-4), noon
Padua at Newark Charter (6-7), 12:30 p.m.
St. Thomas More at St. Elizabeth, 2 p.m. St. Elizabeth continues with its stretch of quality opponents when the Ravens come to Wilmington. The host Vikings will ignore Aniah Patterson at their own peril; St. Thomas More’s senior sniper leads her team into New Castle County for the second of three times this season.
Boys
Basketball
Monday
ECHS (6-6) at St. Thomas More (6-6), 5 p.m.
St. Mark’s (9-3) at Caravel (7-4), 7:15 p.m. The Spartans and Buccaneers have had a series of close games in recent years, and there is no reason to expect this to be any different. Look for St. Mark’s to slow things down against a Caravel team that prefers and up-tempo pace.
Tuesday
Salesianum (7-5) at Archmere (10-3), 6:15 p.m. It’s another tough road stop for the Sals, who are nearing the end of a stretch of seven road games in their last eight. The Auks are coming off their first loss in six games, and their first of 2019, and will be at home for just the fifth time this season.
