MILLTOWN — Mike DiGennaro, who led Saint Mark’s to a DIAA state championship this past season, has been named the 2024 boys high school track and field coach of the year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

This past season, the Spartans went undefeated in the regular season, then placed first in the New Castle County championship and the Catholic Conference championship. The team was voted team of the year by the state coaches committee. As a state winner, DiGennaro is under consideration for the national coach of the year award.

“I share this honor with my coaching staff,” DiGennaro said in a statement. “We shared the same vision and goals, and we worked together to create the blueprint for a successful team this year. They deserve the credit along with me.”

The award also reflects on his team, he added, particularly the seniors. They set the tone and led the way, DiGennaro said.

Saint Mark’s athletic director Matt Smith said the honor is “a testament to his leadership as he inspires his athletes to dig deep, to strive for excellence and to never give up. He puts them through intense training and, at the same time, finds a way to make it fun and enjoyable.”
